Confused with Carbon Terminology?

Let’s make it all easier for you!

Indians are becoming increasingly aware about the world of carbon, there are various terminology that are encountered in the carbon market and and it is full of jargons. If you wish deep dive into the carbon market, then it is advisable for you to be informed about carbon terminologies. If you are finding them confusing, we at Navitas Solar, as one of the leading PV module manufacturer in the country, are at your service. We make it a priority to educate our customers and provide guidance that will assist them.

Let’s take a look at the most common terms of the carbon market and their easy explanation.

  • Carbon Credit is a certificate representing one metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent(tCo2e) that is either prevented from being emitted into the atmosphere (emissions avoidance/reduction) or removed from the atmosphere as the result of a carbon-reduction project.
  • Carbon Offsets allow you to balance out your emissions with Co2 is reduced by offsetting.
  • Carbon Footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (Co2, methane) that are generated by our actions. Average carbon footprint in India is 560 kg a year.
  • Net-Zero Carbon means Carbon emissions caused by them have been balanced out by funding an equivalent amount of carbon saving elsewhere. It is considered a forward-looking commitment requiring companies to reduce their emissions and balance remaining (residual) emissions by a given target year.
  • Carbon Neutral means that any CO2 released into the atmosphere from a company’s activities is balanced by an equivalent amount being removed.
  • Carbon Negative/Carbon Minus means the same thing as “Climate Positive”. It occurs when a company removes or captures more CO2 from the atmosphere than it even emits. Then, the company has a negative amount of carbon emissions and positively impacts the climate.
  • Climate Change is a long-term shift in global or regional climate patterns. Rise in temperature and global warming.
  • Climate Positive means that activity goes beyond achieving net-zero carbon emissions to create an environmental benefit by removing additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
  • Climate Neutral refers to reducing all GHG to the point of zero while eliminating all other negative environmental impacts that an organization may cause. Climate Neutral is often used interchangeably with carbon-neutral, but it places more of an emphasis on covering greenhouse gases beyond carbon dioxide. In addition, it can include climate impacts other than greenhouse-gas emissions, for example, radiative forcing from aircraft contrails.
  • A carbon credit is considered a “voluntary carbon credit” when it is bought and retired voluntarily rather than as part of a process of compliance with legal obligations.

See, understanding these terms is easier than you thought! So now you are well informed about the carbon terminologies which will help you to take informed decisions.
